Globalization And The Dynamics Of Urban Development In Indonesia

Abstract

This paper investigates the impact of globalization on urban development in Indonesia by examining its multifaceted dimensions, including environmental sustainability, infrastructure provision, spatial planning, and regional collaboration. The study aims to assess how global frameworks, such as the New Urban Agenda (NUA), the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and Sustainable Urban Mobility (SUM), have shaped Indonesia’s urban policies and planning practices. Employing a descriptive-qualitative methodology supported by desk-based literature review, the research further incorporates comparative analysis with actual conditions, contextual developments, and events occurring within Indonesia. By reviewing historical trajectories, institutional frameworks, and policy instruments, the study highlights both the challenges and opportunities that globalization presents for urban governance. The findings demonstrate that globalization not only drives physical urban expansion but also transforms inter-city systems, influences strategic planning approaches, and necessitates integrated responses to environmental risks, technological shifts, and socio-economic inequalities. In addition, the paper addresses contemporary developments such as digital transformation, aerotropolis-oriented planning, and the urban implications of the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly in relation to spatial resilience. The study underscores the importance of adopting holistic, inclusive, and sustainability-driven planning paradigms to effectively respond to globalization. It concludes that Indonesian cities must be strategically embedded within global urban networks while simultaneously preserving local values and identities. Ultimately, the paper offers practical insights for urban planners and policymakers seeking to align global dynamics with national development priorities.
